Summer Graduates

The University of Tennessee holds Commencement Ceremonies in the Fall and Spring semesters. If you plan to graduate in a summer term and would like to participate in a commencement ceremony, please review the information below to determine your eligibility to participate in the preceding spring ceremony or the following fall ceremony.

Remember that regardless of whether you choose to participate in a commencement ceremony, you must complete an application to graduate which is available in the Office of the University Registrar, 209 Student Services Building and on this website: application to graduate. Please visit Graduation Deadlines.

Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate students who plan to graduate in a summer term will be permitted to participate in the preceding Spring semester commencement ceremony if :
  • all requirements will be met upon the completion of 12 or fewer hours of coursework; or
  • all requirements will be met upon the completion of course work offered in the mini-term immediately following the spring semester.
Graduate and Professional Students
Non-thesis Masters Candidates and Ed.S. Candidates

Non-thesis Masters Candidates and Ed.S. Candidates who plan to graduate in a summer term will be permitted to walk in the preceding Spring semester commencement ceremony if all requirements will be met upon the completion of 12 or fewer hours.

Masters Candidates Writing Theses
Masters Candidates Writing Theses who plan to graduate in a summer term will not be permitted to walk in the preceding spring semester commencement ceremony; instead, they may participate in the following fall semester's commencement ceremony.

Doctoral Candidates
Doctoral Candidates who plan to graduate in a summer term will not be permitted to walk in the preceding spring semester commencement ceremony; instead, they may participate in the following fall semester's commencement ceremony.

Law Students
Law Students who plan to graduate in a summer term should check with the College of Law concerning participation in the preceding spring semester.
