Honors Categories for Graduating Seniors

The following honors categories are in place for graduating seniors:

  • "Cum Laude" 3.50-3.64 cumulative gpa
  • "Magna Cum Laude" 3.65-3.79 cumulative gpa
  • "Summa Cum Laude" 3.80-4.00 cumulative gpa

These honors categories are based on a student’s cumulative average at the end of the term preceding the graduation term.

For students who entered the University prior to Fall 1985, the honors categories are based on all cumulative grade point averages received at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and all prior college(s), with the lower of the averages determining the honor category.

For all students entering Fall 1985 and thereafter, honors categories are based only on the average earned at the University. Students must have earned at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) at the University in order to qualify for the honors categories.

Since diploma orders must be sent to the engraver before the final semester's grades are available, the honors categories printed on the diplomas are based on the prior semester's grade point average. If a student's final semester of study raises the grade point average to the level required for honors or a higher category, that student may request to receive a new diploma that will indicate the correct honors category. The graduation staff will also look for changes when auditing the final degree requirements. There is no additional charge for the new diploma.

These categories became effective the Summer Term 1991.
