How do I know if I'm eligible to petition
for Academic Second Opportunity?
You are eligible if you…
Have returned to UT (Knoxville), after at least a
three-calendar-year absence
Have an academic record in your previous attendance
which is unsatisfactory
(normally less than a 2.0 gpa)
Have earned at least a 2.5 gpa in at least 15 hours
of A–F graded, "in-classroom" coursework since returning
to the university
Will take at least 30 semester hours of coursework
after your return to complete a degree.
How would approval affect my academic record? All academic work completed in the previous attendance remains
on the transcript, but is not included in the gpa calculation. The new
gpa is based on grades earned following readmission. Hours in which a
grade of A, B, or C was earned in the previous attendance are computed
as "satisfactory" and may still be counted toward a degree.
Hours in which a grade of D was earned in the previous attendance may
no longer be counted toward a degree.
How
do I petition for Academic Second Opportunity?
When: You have earned at least 15
credit hours since your return with grades of A-F and a gpa of 2.5 or better
and it is no later than the term before the term you plan to graduate.
How: Complete a petition (ASO
Petition) in your college and have it submitted to the Office of the
University Registrar. The deadline is the semester preceding graduation.
Decisions on granting Academic Second Opportunity are made by committee. The chairperson of the committee is responsible for informing the student of the committee's decision.
If
I am awarded ASO and meet the gpa requirement, am I eligible for honors?
To meet the minimum qualifications for honors, you
must complete at least 60 hours between your return to the University and
graduation.
What if I have earned a degree at another
school since I attended UT?
If hours you earned during your previous attendance
have already been applied toward the completion of an awarded degree from
a four-year institution, ASO will not be granted.
