How will policies which state "a grade of C or better is required" be interpreted?
|
| For policies or regulations which state that "a grade of C or better is required," a grade of C will be considered a 2.0. This means that for these policies and regulations, a grade of C- will not satisfy the standard. The same is true for rules and regulations that require "a B or better" or "a grade of A." An A- or B- will not satisfy this standard. |

| |
What courses are covered by the grading system change?
|
| All courses taken for undergraduate credit beginning Fall 2008. There is no change to the grading system for courses taken for graduate credit. If a student takes a 400-level course for graduate credit, a minus grade cannot be assigned. |
| |
| |
Is an instructor for a course required to use plus and minus grades?
|
| The assignment of grades in a course is the responsibility of the instructor. The new grading system provides more grade options, but how those options are used is the decision of the instructor. |
| |
| |
Is there a value assigned to each grade on a grading scale of 0-100, e.g., 90 = A-?
|
| There is no university-wide grading scale, although some units have guidelines or requirements about grading procedures. Faculty should check with their academic unit for information about any policies or procedures that may apply to them. |
| |
| |
Will minus grades be listed on students' transcripts?
|
| Yes. The transcript will include any minus grades that the student earns at UTK beginning Fall Semester 2008. |
| |
| |
Why is there no A+ in the new grading system?
|
| An A+ was not included when the Undergraduate Council and Faculty Senate voted to approve the new grading system. This option has subsequently been reviewed by the Undergraduate Academic Policy Committee and the decision was to take no action. |
| |
| |
Will previous coursework (i.e., courses completed up until the Fall 2008 semester) be converted to reflect the new grading system?
|
| No grades previously issued will be converted or changed. |
| |
| |
What is the grading system for Incompletes and Grade Changes?
|
| The final grade will be assigned according to the grading scale at the time the course was initiated. |
