Academic Advising
Graduate Student Advising
Graduate
students should contact their departmental faculty to arrange an advising
appointment. For students not accepted into specific programs, the Assistant
to the Dean of Graduate Studies or his/her designee may act as advisor.
The web registration system will ask if you have discussed your program
with your advisor. Answer 'yes' if you have; otherwise, you cannot continue
with the registration process. Graduate School Web Page: http://gradstudies.utk.edu/
Undergraduate Student Advising
Beginning with the Fall 2005 semester, UT introduced
a new academic advising policy. The new policy has implications for all
students. Please read the following highlights of the policy below to learn
what you need to do for registration.

- Any student who has earned less than 30 credit
hours at UT or is on Academic Review must meet with an advisor each
semester to be cleared for registration for the following semester.
- Transfer students who have earned less than 30 credit
hours at UT or are on Academic Review must meet with an advisor each
semester to be cleared for registration for the following semester.
- After a student has earned 30 hours and is no longer
on Academic Review, he/she will meet with an advisor once an academic
year.
- A student’s required advising term is
determined by the last digit of the student ID number:
Even number: Advised in Fall for Spring
(A last digit of zero is considered an even number.)
Odd number: Advised in Spring for Fall
- A student’s registration date will still be based on the number of credit hours earned towards graduation at UT, for example – seniors will have an earlier registration date than sophomores.
You are encouraged to meet with your advisor as often as necessary. Remember, an advising appointment is much more than simply picking classes for the next term. It is an opportunity for you and your advisor to develop and evaluate an academic plan that will enable you to reach your academic goals. Take full advantage of your advising appointment and prepare for the meeting by reviewing your academic history, your DARS report (degree audit) and your progress in courses this term.
If you are unsure how to contact your advisor, please go to the Student Success web site at http://studentsuccess.tennessee.edu/advising or call the Student Success Center at 865/946-4357 for assistance. See the table below for college websites and contact numbers.
