Student ID and Access Information

Two kinds of important identification and access information now that you are admitted to UT.
1. NetID and NetID Password are used to access:
  • CPO — also known as Circle Park Online is where you register for classes. https://cpo.utk.edu/CPOWeb/
  • DARSweb — or UT's online version of the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) which tracks a student's progress toward graduation and provides a concise report.
  • UT Email — also known as Webmail and accessed through https://webmail.utk.edu.
  • My UT Portal — a site featuring a suite of commonly used services, serving as a starting point and gateway to the Web. Services provided include Circle Park Online where you can register for classes, pay fees, and more.
  • Blackboard — the virtual common place that allows students, faculty, and staff members to engage in social dialogue through the collaborative features within course and organization sites. More information can be found at http://online.utk.edu.
  • Financial Aid Information — available from the Financial Aid website, you can view, accept or decline financial aid awards
2. Student ID and Personal Security Code are used to access:
  • Academic History Report — the working version of the transcript intended for internal (UT) use only. It includes information not found on the transcript that is helpful for advising (e.g., GPA information, semester and home addresses, standardized test scores, high school attended and high school grade point average, etc).

What is a Student ID?
A student ID number is a 9-digit number assigned to every admitted student to uniquely identify him/her at UT. Undergraduate students are notified of their student ID by the Undergraduate Admissions Office. Graduate students are notified of their student ID by the Graduate Admissions Office. This 9-digit number will be printed on your Student ID card (also known as the VolCard). Please keep this in a safe place.

What is a Personal Security Code (PSC)?
Your personal security code (PSC) is a 4-digit code used with your Student ID. It's used to access your financial aid awards, academic history and DARS (degree audit) reports. Only you have access to your PSC. If you have a social security number, then your PSC is the last four digits of your social security number; if you do not have a social security number (for example, international students do not have one), then your psc is the last four digits of your student ID number. If your SSN was not on your admission application, your PSC is the last four digits of your Student ID.

Any student who has attended UT (Knoxville) Fall 1988 Semester or later has a PSC on the student record system. It is not possible to assign a PSC if you do not already have one.

There are several ways to obtain your PSC:

  • In Person
To receive your PSC in person, you must present a photo ID.  Visit the University Registrar's Information Center, 209 Student Services Building. (The Student Services Building is located at Circle Park.)
  • By Telephone

What is a NetID and NetID Password?
Your NetID is the "name" part of your free UT email address, name@tennessee.edu. Your NetID password is used with your NetID to access CPO (Circle Park Online) for registration, your UT e-mail, Blackboard and My/UT portal. To learn more about your NetID go to http://directory.utk.edu.

Your NetID password by default is composed of the following three pieces of information:

    1. The first two letters of your birth month in lower case.
    2. The last two digits of your birth year.
    3. The last four digits of your UT ID Number. For example, if you were born February 1979 and your UT ID Number is 123-45-6789 then your default password would be fe796789.

Note: The default password allows you to gain initial access to password protected facilities. Since it is composed of personal information that could be guessed, it is relatively insecure and should not be used as your permanent password. You should change this password to something more private as soon as possible. Go to Change Password when you are ready to do so.

If you are new to UT or want additional information on IDs, passwords, and using email please go to http://oit.utk.edu/areyounew.html.

Forgotten passwords
If you can't remember your NetID password, you can reset it by going to Password Reset and entering your UT ID Number and Student PIN Code to verify your identity.

Otherwise you will need to go to Room 105G Aconda Court and ask for a NetID password reset. Bring your UT ID Card (Vol Card) to verify your identity. Aconda Court is located at the corner of Volunteer Blvd. and Cumberland Ave. near the University Center.
