Benefits Payable Under Chapter 33
Different amounts payable based on time served.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill payment is based on the amount of service completed after September 10, 2001. Your tuition & fees payment, housing allowance, and book stipend are all based on this percentage. You will receive a larger benefit if you served more active duty or mobilization time.
Tuition & Fees
Paid directly to the school on behalf of the student, as follows:
- Veterans (not on Active Duty)
Lesser of:
Tuition & Fees Charged,
or
Highest amount of Tuition & Fees charged in state for full-time, undergraduate (State of TN: $227 per credit hour tuition or $12,232 in total fees).
- Veterans (on Active Duty)
Lesser of:
Tuition & Fees Charged,
or
Tuition & Fees minus any military tuition assistance (TA).
Housing
Paid directly to the student as follows:
- Paid equivalent to BAH for E-5 with dependents.
- Determined by school’s zip code.
- AD or anyone training at 50% or less (this includes ½ time) and those pursuing training only by distance education are not eligible.
- If enrolled in at least 1 on-campus course and pursuing all other courses via distance education and are at more than ½ time (51% or more) eligible for BAH.
- If attending two schools, the zip code of the degree granting parent institution will be used to determine amount unless parent institution is online only.
Books
- $41.67 per credit hour up to $1000 per year (pro-rated, lump sum) up to 24 credit hours per academic year (up to 12 months).
- If all 24 credits or $1000 is not used in one academic year, they are NOT banked.
Summer Terms & BAH
- Summer terms have to overlap in order to be able to be combined as more than ½ time or 51% rate of pursuit.
Rural Benefit
- One time payment of $500 paid to individuals who relocate to school from a rural area of 6 or less people per square mile.
Work Study Allowance
- Eligible to receive work study allowance if training time is ¾ time or more.
Licensing & Certification
- Must contact VA to set this up at 1-888-442-4551.
- Only one chance to pass test.
- Payment is not subtracted from entitlement.
