Additional Information Regarding New GI Bill
Title IV funds will not affect GI Bill
- This includes Tuition Assistance, Discounts, Waivers, Scholarships, etc.
- Certifying Official will report the amount that student was charged for tuition & fees only prior to any of the above being applied to student account.
Credits on students account after GI Bill is paid and financial aid, etc. is applied, excess amount should be refunded to student according to already established university refund policy which is through an excess financial aid check.
Veterans who do not complete one or more courses in certified period of enrolment & who does not substantiate mitigating circumstances for such courses will be charged an overpayment which can include all of tuition, housing and books.
If veteran incurs overpayment at one school, they must inform new school certifying official of this overpayment.
If veteran withdraws from a class past the refund date for the school, the student will still owe the VA and should contact VA Debt Management for assistance in paying the overpayment amount.
If veteran has an overpayment, they should request certification for each new semester as though they did not have an overpayment, however, tuition & fees, books and housing will not be paid until overpayment amount is paid in full.
Overpayment amounts apply to ALL funding received through new GI Bill including tuition & fees, housing, book allowance and Yellow Ribbon Program. Therefore it is extremely important to notify school certifying official of any changes that you make to your schedule as soon as you make the change to prevent the overpayment amount from growing to a very large amount.
$1200 paid into Active Duty GI Bill will be refunded in a proportional amount to be determined by DoD and will be included in last monthly housing allowance IF veteran did not exhaust Chapter 30 benefits before switching to Chapter 33 and DID exhaust Chapter 33.
If veteran is overpaid through Tuition & Fees, VA will recoup the money from the student not the school.
