VA Information Sheet for Summer Semester
READ CAREFULLY! |

| The Summer semester is computed differently from any semester in the academic year because it is divided into shorter sessions. The rate of pay for courses taken in combination (i.e. 3 hours 1st session and 3 hours full term) will be determined by the Veterans Administration. Pay rates for the shorter sessions are listed below. |

All Students
All PE courses require that you get a letter from your advisor stating that the courses are required either as part of your curriculum or as part of your hours towards graduation. This letter must be sent directly from the advisor, on letterhead and must include student’s name and the specific course numbers that the student is registered for in order to gain approval for certification. The hours must be required for your degree and will be evaluated by VA Rep to make determination.
- You may only repeat a course if:
1. It is a required course listed in your curriculum in the catalog or on your Degree Audit Report and you received a W, WP, WF, NC or F the first time you took the course, or 2. You make a D or F and the catalog specifically states that it is required that you have a C or higher in the course. - You are only allowed one repeat with the VA.
- Anyone receiving an “NC” in any course must notify our office. Certification hours will be adjusted and will normally result in overpayment.
- Anyone who receives all “F’s” will be checked for class attendance.
- If you receive additional financial aid, professors report attendance to the Registrar’s Office, which is checked by the VA Office at the end of every semester. If there is a Stopped Attending date on that report for you, your benefits will be reduced effective on that date which will put you in an overpayment. Therefore, if you are not doing well in a particular course, go ahead and withdraw from it and let our office know. That way the overpayment amount will not be as much as it would be if you wait until the end of the semester to receive a reduction.
- Before enrolling in any Independent Study course through the Office of Continuing Education, consult the Veterans Affairs Office for approval.
- The Veterans Administration WILL NOT pay for an AUDIT.
- Please be aware of the number of elective courses you accumulate toward your degree program. The Veterans Administration is checking to make sure students are not exceeding the number of electives listed in the catalog.
- ALL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS need to apply for graduation after they complete 90 hours.
- ALL VETERANS must verify enrollment on the last day of every month while you are enrolled and receiving benefits by calling 1-877-823-2378 or going to www.gibill.va.gov and using the WAVE verification system.
- If you have a change of address, contact the Veterans Administration 1-888-442-4551. We are not allowed to make address changes for you.
- If you need additional information about your benefits, please contact Regina Lewellyn (rlewellyn@utk.edu) in Room 209 Student Services Building or 865/974-1500 or on AIM: utkvalady.
